Studios to nurture creative talent

09 December 2011

A former textiles warehouse in Glasgow's Merchant City has been transformed into a new centre for artists and arts companies in a £3.5 million regeneration plan.

The South Block in the Merchant City area will contribute £69m to the local economy, according to its developers, the Scottish arts charity Wasps Studios.

The building in Osborne Street, with 50,000 sq ft of space, now houses studio space for artists and craft makers as well as offices. South Block has already secured tenants for around 70 of the available 96 work spaces in the four-floor Edwardian building.

South Block is part of a project to develop five new arts buildings in five communities in five years with £2.5m National Lottery investment from Creative Scotland, the national arts funding body. Scottish Enterprise estimates that the project  is likely to generate economic benefits of £69m over the next 20 years.

Once the building is fully let it will provide a cultural and creative industries hub for around 200 people.
